Abstract:Jojin’s participating in the praying for rain in Song Dynasty is undisputed, but a new discussion about the true situation of the praying for rain is necessary, because of the historical events of Jojin’s praying for rain themselves and their interpretations contain some misunderstandings and exaggerations. First of all, the records about the praying for rain in Jojin’s diary didn’t accord with the description of ChenYong who was a witness of the ritual. Secondly, the direct reason for conferring the title of “Zenkei Daishi” on Jojin was not the success of praying for rain, but Jojin’s applying for the title and which is with precedent before. Thirdly, Jojin was not the leading role in the praying for rain. Also, Jojin was not the only foreign monk in the praying for rain. And lastly, the official attitude in Song Dynasty suggested that praying for rain as just a ceremony, but human efforts were the point.
