祈望美物与日增        From fairest creatures we desire increase,
        娇媚蔷薇不凋零        That thereby beauty’s rose might never die,
        时来盛极终有殒        But as the riper should by time decease,
        幼嗣后代承其名        His tender heir might bear his memory;
                
        汝心只在汝眸中        But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
        燃点自身放光明        Feed’st thy light’s flame with self-substantial fuel,
        丰饶之地造饥馑        Making a famine where abundance lies,
        与己为敌太无情        Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
                
        汝本世间夺目人        Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament
        唯一信使报阳春        And only herald to the gaudy spring,
        花苞深处蕴芳华        Within thine own bud buriest thy content
        吝啬奢侈集一身        And, tender churl, mak’st waste of niggarding.
                
        汝当怜惜此世界        Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
        切莫贪心入孤坟        To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.
